Here, now i can be a lighthouse Light lives inside me But i’ve been automated since the 70’s And no man can live inside No man No man can enter me No man can be inside me No man can be inside of me No, man Here, now i can be an obelisk Strong in the middle of a Rock at sea And no man made me So no man, no man can scale me No man No man can enter me No man can be inside me No man can be inside of me No, man i’m a no man’s land i’m the stones at the edge of the water And i’m made of you And you’re made of somebody’s daughter i am light for a ship i am made of soft skin and sweet laughter i am made of the moon And the way that i feel when you hold me So hold me now, As the breeze Wills the curtains Knowing that i am an island Will you Enter a no man’s land Knowing it’s uninhabitable

light is a collection of lo-fi demos written and recorded between september 5-8 at the writers and the round songwriting retreat on star island, new hampshire. these songs were being recorded as they were being written, improvised as they were being recorded, a series of exercises in impermanence. i played many instruments i have never played or do not know how to play, and wrote in response to inspirational offerings from others or the environment around me.

thank you to dan blakeslee for facilitating the songwriting workshops and developing such rich writing prompts, to craig werth for overseeing the musical knitty gritty and for letting me borrow your bouzouki and the long talks, to guy capecelatro iii for being the best roommate and schlepping all the snacks and the stuff i didn't use but also for the thumb piano that i did use and for all the other stuff of course, to ellen taylor for being the engine in the train of the whole thing, to mary for the whale songs and your faith, to priscilla for singing, to everyone who came and came through in the pink parlor sunday afternoon, to all of my fellow writers in the round for your steadfast yearning to make and for making and for your fearlessness, to star island for your magic, and to light for being your self.

about

jocelyn mackenzie Brooklyn, New York

Jocelyn Mackenzie is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, artist, and psychic medium. Her debut solo album PUSH is a chamber pop homage to healing through radical self love. The fearlessness in her songwriting combined with the orchestral arrangements of each song alchemizes her pain into a poultice, making the album itself a testimony to hope, heartbreak, and what it means to be human. ... more
